Dagupeño nominated for Oscars

And the Academy Award goes to...

Pinoys around the world would surely wait in anticipation as the winners of the Oscars are announced on February 27, 2011. This is especially true for the awards for best cinematography, best supporting actress and best picture. Why? Filipinos Matthew Libatique, Hailee Steinfeld and several members of the animation team of Pixar are up for the said nominations.
Matthew Libatique got a nomination for his work on the critically acclaimed film Black Swan. Hailee Steinfeld is up for a best supporting actress award for her role as the revenge-seeking Mattie Ross in the Joel and Ethan Coen-directed remake of the Western movie True Grit, where Steinfeld performs alongside Hollywood veterans Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. Toy Story 3, Black Swan and True Grit are all vying for the Best Picture plum.  Toy Story 3 is Pixar's animated masterpiece.

Hailee Steinfeld
Steinfeld's mother is Cheri Steinfeild, an interior designer of Filipino, African-American and European-American descent. Her father is Peter Steinfeld, a Jewish-American personal fitness trainer.

Matthew Libatique
Matthew Libatique who was born in Elmhurst, Queensis is 100% Filipino as both his parents are Filipinos. But I also found out that he is a Dagupeño, thanks to Rovilson Fernandez's (who is also a Dagupeño) tweet:

 Rovilson Fernandez
Props to Matty Libatique. Pinoy D.P. for Black Swan. Crap. There goes my "first guy from Dagupan to get nominated for an Oscar" dream.

Matthew's parents are Justiniano (from Dagupan, Pangasinan) and Georgina Libatique (from Lucena, Quezon). This makes him the first Dagupeño (Sorry Rovilson. You can be the 2nd) and 100 percent Filipino to be nominated for an Oscar!

He will be competing against the cinematographers of “Inception,” “The King’s Speech,” “The Social Network,” and “True Grit.” His previous films which I really liked are Ironman (1&2),  The Number 23 and Inside Man (with Spike Lee as director!).

I hope they all win especially Matthew Libatique who is Dagupan's pride and gem. Their victory is also ours!
